About the SCWH

Established in 1985, the SCWH seeks to promote the study of the Civil War era and to bring greater coherence to the field by encouraging the integration of social, military, political, and other forms of history. The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter, provides a subscription to the quarterly Journal of the Civil War Era, sponsors a biennial conference in even-numbered years, and awards the annual Tom Watson Brown Book Prize for the best book on the Civil War era at a banquet held during the Southern Historical Association conference.

Donate to Our 40th Anniversary Campaign

Over the past forty years, the Society has expanded the meaning of Civil War history and shared new knowledge about this vital chapter of America’s past with students, professionals, and the public, including our graduate student and early career initiatives, awards, the Journal of the Civil War Era, and conferences

To sustain the SCWH’s mission, we are working to raise $40,000 by June 2026. Your support makes a difference, so please help us meet this goal by donating via check or credit card here.
